Turmeric Journey From Mission Haldrak to S.P.I.C.E.

How Seven Years of Research Became India's First Traceable Specialty Agriculture Ecosystem

Commercial Turmeric Farm Being Set up for a Mission Haldrak Grower.
"Every movement begins with a question. Ours was simple: Can turmeric be grown differently? Seven years later, that question has evolved into a vision that could redefine how premium agricultural products are cultivated, verified, marketed, and trusted."

Every Great Journey Begins with Curiosity

In 2019, there was no blueprint for commercially producing premium soilless turmeric in India.

Turmeric had always been cultivated in soil. Farmers had accepted its challenges as part of the profession; variable quality, unpredictable yields, fluctuating prices, contamination risks, fragmented markets, and dependence on commodity supply chains.

The question was never whether turmeric could be grown.

The question was whether it could be grown better.

Could it be cultivated in a controlled environment?

Could quality become predictable instead of variable?

Could every grower produce the same standard of turmeric regardless of geography?

Could buyers purchase with confidence instead of uncertainty?

And perhaps the most important question of all:

Could Indian farmers participate in value creation instead of simply selling raw produce?

Those questions gave birth to what would later become Mission Haldrak.

Mission Haldrak: More Than an Experiment

Mission Haldrak did not begin as a business.

It began as a research mission.

For the next seven years, CV Hydro dedicated itself to understanding one crop in extraordinary detail.

Every cultivation cycle became another lesson.

Every challenge became another refinement.

Protocols evolved.

Nutrient schedules improved.

Growing media were optimized.

Microbial ecosystems were studied.

Environmental parameters were refined.

The objective was never simply to increase yield.

The objective was consistency.

Because consistency creates confidence.

And confidence creates markets.

Building Knowledge Before Building Scale

Many agricultural ventures begin with marketing.

Mission Haldrak began with learning.

Rather than immediately scaling commercial production, CV Hydro invested years in documenting observations, validating cultivation practices, conducting demonstrations, and continuously improving protocols.

Knowledge was shared through workshops, demonstrations, online learning sessions, and practical field experiences.

Over time, this knowledge reached growers from across India and abroad.

Today, more than 900 participants have engaged with CV Hydro's educational initiatives, representing farmers, professionals, entrepreneurs, investors, and agricultural enthusiasts united by one common interest:

Can agriculture become a better business?

  • Yes

  • No

The Real Test Was Never the Workshop

Training people is one thing.

Creating successful commercial growers is another.

The true success of Mission Haldrak would never be measured by the number of workshops conducted or participants trained.

It would be measured by one simple outcome:

Can growers build successful businesses using what they have learned?

The answer to that question required more than education.

It required commercial proof.

Meet Pramod Kulkarni

Every movement eventually needs its first pioneer.

For Mission Haldrak, that pioneer is Pramod Kulkarni, founder of Dhanavantri Hydro Farms and the creator of the consumer brand Dhriti Spices.

Like many entrepreneurs entering agriculture, Pramod's journey involved learning, experimentation, discipline, and persistence.

Instead of viewing turmeric merely as a crop, he viewed it as the foundation of a brand.

Rather than stopping at cultivation, he continued through processing, packaging, branding, and direct-to-consumer sales.

Today, Dhriti Spices represents an important milestone in the Mission Haldrak journey.

It has become one of the first commercial examples of residue-free, soilless-grown turmeric powder reaching consumers as a branded product.

This achievement demonstrates that value can be created beyond cultivation when quality, traceability, and entrepreneurship work together.

From Commodity to Consumer Trust

Consumers today are asking new questions.

Where was my food grown?

Who produced it?

How was it cultivated?

Has it been tested?

Can I trust the quality?

Traditional agricultural supply chains rarely answer these questions.

SPICE intends to.

The vision is simple:

  • Every certified product should carry not only a brand, but a story.

  • Every pack should connect consumers to the grower.

  • Every lot should be independently verified.

  • Every quality claim should be backed by evidence.

  • Trust should no longer depend on marketing.

  • It should depend on proof.

Beyond Turmeric Powder

The commercial journey does not end with producing turmeric powder.

Premium turmeric creates opportunities across multiple value-added categories.

Dhriti Spices has already begun exploring wellness-oriented product innovation, including convenient Turmeric Shot variants designed for modern lifestyles.

This represents an important shift in agricultural thinking.

Farmers no longer need to participate only at the cultivation stage.

They can participate in product innovation, brand building, customer relationships, and premium market creation.

The future belongs not merely to growers.

It belongs to grower-entrepreneurs.

Why the Paradigm Needed to Change

Mission Haldrak successfully demonstrated that premium soilless turmeric cultivation was possible.

The next challenge was much bigger.

How could this success be replicated responsibly?

How could quality remain consistent across multiple growers?

How could buyers trust products from different farms?

How could laboratories, financial institutions, processors, logistics partners, and brands work together under one common standard?

Scaling cultivation required scaling trust.

That realization gave birth to a much larger idea.

Introducing S.P.I.C.E.

Strategic Portal for Indian Cultivators & Entrepreneurs

S.P.I.C.E. is not simply another farming initiative.

It is an ecosystem.

Its purpose is to connect every stakeholder involved in creating premium agricultural products:

• Growers

• Buyers

• Processors

• Laboratories

• Financial Institutions

• Technology Partners

• Input Suppliers

• Brand Owners

• Exporters

Rather than operating independently, each participant contributes to a shared framework built on standards, transparency, and commercial collaboration.

The First Mission: SPICE100

Every ecosystem needs a beginning.

SPICE100 is that beginning.

Its objective is to establish the first 100 acres of certified soilless turmeric cultivation through a network of carefully selected growers committed to following standardized cultivation protocols and quality systems.

The number 100 is symbolic.

It represents a manageable scale at which quality, governance, traceability, and buyer confidence can be established before expanding further.

SPICE100 is not the destination.

It is the foundation.

An India-First Vision

India has given turmeric to the world for centuries.

The next opportunity is not simply exporting more turmeric.

The opportunity is exporting greater trust.

Imagine a future where every premium turmeric product carries:

✔ The grower's identity

✔ Independent laboratory verification

✔ Complete lot traceability

✔ QR-enabled transparency

✔ Standardized cultivation protocols

✔ Global buyer confidence

That is the future S.P.I.C.E. is working toward.

A New Definition of Success

Success is no longer measured only by tonnes harvested.

It is measured by value created.

By businesses built.

By consumer confidence earned.

By farmers becoming entrepreneurs.

By buyers becoming long-term partners.

By India becoming synonymous not only with turmeric, but with verified quality.

The Journey Has Just Begun

Mission Haldrak proved that change is possible.

Pramod Kulkarni demonstrated that commercial success can follow disciplined execution.

S.P.I.C.E. now seeks to transform individual success into a collaborative ecosystem.

The first 100 growers will not simply cultivate turmeric.

They will help establish a new benchmark for premium specialty agriculture.

The question is no longer whether this future is possible.

The question is:

Who will help build it?
